Scary 19 Peaks
This list was created by Jason Pelton who lives in Schoharie County. He chose 19 peaks of interest in various State Forests. Many of these peaks are seldom visited but all have interesting views, features or history. Finishing the 19 peaks earns a custom-designed patch. Hiking the peaks in the winter and taking a trip to the lean-to in Clapper Hollow State Forest earns of "rocker" designed to compliment the main patch. Some of these peaks have trails or woods roads that approach the summit while other must be bushwhacked. Many different routes may be used and, at times, some cautions are in order. Make sure you have a good map and compass. A GPS can be very helpful also particularly in locating the given summit coordinates. Many of these ascents simply consist of parking somewhere and going up. Make sure that you do not hike on private land unless you get the owner's permission. It is possible to walk directly to the summit and back but you are encouraged to explore a little. Many adventures are posted on the Scary 19 Facebook page.
